When you think of Moparty, you probably think of big, bright, beautiful Mopars ripping down the drag strip. While there is plenty of that, we also give the Mopar faithful a chance to put their cars through their paces on the autocross. You'll see everything from 340 Six-Pack E-Bodies, to turbo 80s Dodges, to Vipers, and much more taking on the cones at Beech Bend's nostalgic oval track.

From the Dirt Track to the Autocross: 1971 Plymouth Duster

Outside of the obvious safety concerns, there are little requirements for autocross. You don’t need to have a fast car, a well handling car, or even a legal car. But, you do need to have fun.

Steven Phillips won’t win anything this weekend at MoParty, but he’ll certainly have more smiles than anyone else in competition. He picked up this 1971 Plymouth Duster from an equipment auction in Georgia. “It was beat and banged,” said Steven. He and family put it back together with parts he already had. It was an asphalt circle track car from Florida. “We had all the parts, we just started putting it back together for the fun of it.”

He operates a YouTube channel: Phillip’s Run, Drip, and Bubble Company. They fixed up the Plymouth on the channel. “Now, we hunt places to race and run the car,” said Stevens. “That’s what it’s all about, have fun, you don’t want to fix’em up and leave’em sitting.”

They bought the car as a roller and added a 340 ci and 727 automatic he had laying around. They didn’t build it or make any significant upgrades, simply dropped in the engine. “It’s got the power,” said Steven. “But I’m out here running autocross on ‘ole hard dirt track tires.”

Because of the treadwear rules, Steven has to run in the Exhibition class, meaning he’s not formally competing. The next big plan is to make it street legal and they have all the parts.

The car is nicknamed Major Pain, “You’ve got the General Lee and General Mayhem, we got Major Pain.”

“[The autocross techs] were more worried about the rust coming off the car,” said Steven. “That’s American made rust right there, that’s good stuff.”
