After the refreshingly cool night of racing in Tulsa, day four of RMRW Race Week 2.0 saw the competitors head northwest, back across the state line and to Mid America Dragway near Geuda Springs, Kansas. Originally a World War II aircraft base, Mid America transitioned to dragstrip duty in the mid-1960s and after several years of dormancy in the 2000s, the track was refurbished in 2018 with new concrete and a ton of re-work. But before the racing could continue, the drivers had to get there and that is where the problems started to crop up. Most serious involved Motorcycle racer Shane Werner, who was knocked out of competition after a traffic accident sent him to the hospital with a broken leg. Comparatively, drivers who found themselves driving down dirt roads or having the typical race-car troubles got off pretty lightly. Okay, maybe there was a piston swap on the side of the road, fenders rattled off of trailers, and so on. But it wasn't all bad news...a stray kitten that greeted racers wound up gaining a new home.
The end is nearly in sight for the racers, but there is still a pretty hefty distance to go and no guarantee that they will make it. Michael Narx's "GolfKart" Volkswagen had a wheel bearing that packed it up, Adam Hodson's Mustang lost a band in the Powerglide of his Mustang, and many others would have to endure the results of a 1 a.m. Taco Bell dinner and a couple of hours' worth of rest. Thunder Valley is the last stop on this tour...who will make it back?
Adam Hodson's SN-95 Mustang wound up down with transmission issues, but was back on the road with help from Jake's Performance.
