Brothers Trucks 1955-1959 Fan Shroud Installation

Looking very much like what you’d find on a new truck, this vacuum-formed plastic shroud is a perfect fit for ’55-’59 Chevy pickups and is the simplest way to enhance your cooling. BROTHERS Chevy/GMC truck Parts also manufacture shrouds to fit any Chevy pickup from ’47 to ’72.

We couldn’t swear this is the factory setup — Project Yard Truck was converted from six to a 283ci V-8 by the previous owner — but it couldn’t be very much different. As you can see, the fan is out in the middle of nowhere, and can draw air from anywhere, perhaps even through the radiator!

After catching about a pint of coolant by pulling off the top hose and tying it back, we were able to clear the way for the shroud. By rotating the fan (loosen the belt to make it easy) as the shroud went down, the trial fit was a snap. The flexibility of the plastic is a big plus here.

We found and marked a few interferences such as the bottom hose, and easily trimmed them with a saber saw. We rounded the bottom corners to make the drop-in smoother.

Using a yellow grease pencil (a very good choice for most shop use), we located and drilled six mounting holes. Then we used 1/4-inch self-tapping sheet metal screws to fasten it to the radiator core support.

What a big difference! Now it’s plain to see that any air pulled by the fan is going to come from inside the shroud, which means it must go through the radiator. We’re going to add a strip of aluminum around the top half to better cover the blades for safety’s sake.
