Holley Performance NMRA Racers Battle At US 131 Motorsports Park

08/10/2022

With championship points on the line, the National Mustang Racers Association (NMRA) competitors headed north to US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan for a Mustang and Ford throwdown. Now in its third year, the Arrington Performance NMRA/NMCA Power Festival, presented by TorqStorm Superchargers, has proven to pack in all forms of American muscle.

The Holley All Ford Nationals NMRA racers wasted little time, taking advantage of the sticky surface to lay down nasty qualifying times. Located roughly two hours from Detroit between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, the track is set right off US 131 and boasts that it is the “Fastest Track in Michigan.” Ford drivers put that claim to the test, but spectators also enjoyed the manufacturer’s midway, and a vibrant selection of beautiful muscle machines in the UPR Products car show.

NMRA MI 22 Junior McKenzie

Junior McKenzie qualified 16th with his 1979 Ford Mustang. The driver from Valrico, Florida ran 9.60 at 121 MPH.

Since this is one of three NMRA/NMCA races, VP Racing Madditives Renegade was combined with Edelbrock Xtreme Street. The quickest NMRA car in the bunch was Stephen Barnett’s 1990 Mustang, which laid down a 4.63 at 153mph pass to claim the third qualified spot.

Michigan runner Samantha Moore has been lighting it up in JDM Engineering Limited Street with her ProCharged 2014 Mustang GT/CS. She ran a best of 8.02 at 170.92 to take the top spot in qualifying. Limited Street was one of the few classes to finish, as bad weather delayed the start of Sunday’s eliminations. Moore met Stacey Roby in the final round. Roby took a holeshot and blasted to a quick 8.13 in his 2014 Mustang, but Moore charged past clocking an 8.02 to win the race.

NMRA MI 22 Cameron Bowles

Cameron Bowles took the top qualifying spot in Open Comp. Bowles cut a .001 light and his Maverick blasted to a 9.74 at 125 MPH.

Charlie Booze Jr. led the way in G-Force Racing Transmissions Coyote Stock, qualifying with a 9.82 at 135 mph in his 1990 Mustang. The class completed just one round, but will finish at the Holley Ford Fest event in Bowling Green.

Mark Anderson ran 10.13 at 127.84 to top the Factory Stock field. He won his first round and will finish with the other E1 winners in Bowling Green.

NMRA MI 22 Dennis Corn

It’s always a blast watching Dennis Corn and his stick-shift Thunderbird. Corn qualified 7th with a .005 light and a run of 9.65 in the quarter!

NMRA/NMCA pair up all the brands for TorqStorm Superchargers True Street. Tony Karamitsos and his 1969 Chevrolet Camaro claimed victory and Randy Thomas represented the Holley NMRA Ford Nationals Series averaging an impressive 8.68 seconds across his three runs to earn the runner-up honors in his Shelby GT500.

Other NMRA winners included:

  • David Diehl, 1994 Mustang (9-second)
  • Mark Lewis, 2019 Mustang (10-second)
  • Logan Day, 2021 Mustang (11-second)
  • Katrina Wiggins, 2014 Mustang (12-second)
  • Rodney Ward, 2014 Mustang (13-second)
  • Makenna Oshinski, 2006 Mustang (14-second)
  • Ted Bailey, 2018 Focus RS (15-second)

NMRA MI 22 Bigfoot 1

Bigfoot 1, the original unit built by Bob Chandler, had prime parking at US 131.

The NMRA Holley Ford Nationals series returns to action for the final event of the season with the 24th Annual Whipple Superchargers NMRA World Finals presented by Competition Clutch, featuring the Holley Intergalactic Ford Festival, which is held from September 29-October 2 at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
