The Baja California Peninsula has been a staple of off-roading culture since the 1960s, when the rocky, dusty and torturous stretches of roads and trails between the northernmost sections of Baja California and La Paz, Baja California Sur became the iconic route to take to prove the toughness and durability of both man and machine. For decades, seeing Baja Bugs, built trucks, sand rails and motorcycles flying through cactus-studded landscapes loaded with choking dust and boulders that would mangle anything less than the best was the draw, but there is much more to the peninsula than just off-road racing. Despite the forbidding and hostile surface, life blooms with ocotillos and boojum trees, pack rats and ground squirrels and a marine system supported by the Gulf of California on the eastern coast and the Pacific Ocean on the west. The western coast between El Rosario, Baja California and Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur is a rugged landscape of mountains and the Baja California Desert in full splendor, and it is host to spectacular, secluded beaches that can only be reached either by boat or by off-roading vehicles.

With over 350 miles of coastline between El Rosario and Guerrero Negro pretty much left alone and unexplored, it seemed like an ideal place to put a Polaris General 1000 through the paces. UTV Underground paired off with surfer Jamie O'Brien to put together a UTV that could explore for days without the need of a chase vehicle, and with the aid of companies like BFGoodrich, XDR, No Limit Racing, Walker Evans, Rockford Fosgate and more, knocked the transportation side of the equation out of the park. Able to traverse the rugged landscape and bring them directly to the surf that few have visited, they have gone beyond the concept of a camping trip or simple overlanding and have instead gone exploring a fairly inaccessible section of North America, enjoying the geography of the land and the beauty of the Pacific Coastline to it's fullest.
