Wild At Night: Everything You Can Expect At The Inaugural Holley LS Fest Texas

05/26/2022

We started out with Holley LS Fest here in our backyard of Bowling Green, Kentucky. We planted the seed of bringing together gearheads based on an engine platform…and wow, did that seed grow! A few years later we decided to try our luck by expanding the event out in Las Vegas, Nevada with LS Fest West and we didn’t go home empty-handed. Now Holley is taking the next step in bringing LS Fest to the masses by bringing Holley LS Fest to Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth for the inaugural LS Fest Texas, taking place June 17-18, 2022, presented by eBay Motors.

Whether you are new to the LS Fest phenomenon or you’ve been to one in the past, we should probably start by telling you that LS Fest Texas will be a bit…different. For starters, we aren’t going to start the fun until 1 p.m., and we’re going to keep the fun flowing until midnight. It’s Texas in June, and that means it’s going to be hotter than that little red pepper your buddy said you could eat raw with no problem. It also means we’re going to have plenty of night-time action from each of our event segments, including our first foray into no-prep drag racing. We’re both excited to see everyone in Forth Worth and to see what a little bit of Lone Star flavor brings to the LS Fest experience!

Boost District Superchargers Drag Racing

The single biggest change that you will see at LS Fest Texas compared to LS Fest East or West will center around the dragstrip. You asked for it, and we heard you: we are going to have a real-deal no-prep drag race. That means that the only excess rubber on the ground will be whatever was left by the racers in front of you. Since we will be running into the night, it only made sense to have a bit of a wildcard twist to the drag racing for LS Fest Texas. There are rules, so let's be clear about what our no-prep race will look like:

  • The course itself will be the 1/8th mile run down Texas Motor Speedway's NASCAR Pit Road.
  • All races, regardless of class, will be a heads-up race chosen by chip draw. Races will be run with an instant starting light and winners will be shown only with a win light. No times will be posted.
  • There will be NO track prep. No compound. No custom spray mixes. No juice bottles. You get one water burnout, that's it. After that, it's between you, the throttle pedal, and fate.
  • There will be cameras recording at the starting and finishing line. Jump calls will be determined by "crack of a tire" from the starting line camera.
  • Chase is NOT a race.
  • One test hit per car before the racing begins (except for racers competing in the Cadillac V-Series class, see below).
  • Car and driver must pass NHRA rules for safety based on ET and Speed for 1/8th mile.
  • No passenger.
  • No nitromethane.
  • No double-entries in same or different class. If you are eliminated, however, you can move to Grudge Test & Tune.
  • All calls from the starter ARE FINAL.

Are the basic rules clear enough? Good. Then let's move on to the classes you can expect to see at LS Fest Texas:

  • Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Big Tire Unlimited: 29x10.5 or bigger tire, wheelie bars allowed, no weights, any style door car.

  • Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Small Tire Unlimited: 28x10.5 non-W, 28x11.5 DOT Bias Ply, or 275/60-15 Drag Radial tire. Any power adder. Stock-style front suspension with either stock-style rear suspension or back-halved. AWD is allowed. Must be production vehicle with body panels (hood optional). No wheelie bars.

  • Drag & Drive (N/A): 10+ mile cruise on the grounds before immediately going to the strip for eliminations. Additional cruising might happen between rounds at Holley's discretion, so your ride better be able to handle itself. Natural Aspiration only. Stock wheelbase. Stock suspension or frame rail ladder bar, no tube chassis, no full front clips or back-half cars. Stock looking interior, seat deletes okay. Stock firewalls, can be notched for clearances if needed. Working headlights, taillights. No wheelie bars. No front struts in vehicles that didn't come with them factory. Tires must be DOT approved, max 315MM wide, must race and cruise on the same set of wheels and tires with no changing permitted (except in cases of tire damage, at which point a tech needs to be notified before a change is made).

  • Texas Speed & Performance Drag & Drive (Power Adder): 10+ mile cruise on the grounds before immediately going to the strip for eliminations. Additional cruising might happen between rounds at Holley's discretion, so your ride better be able to handle itself.

  • Truck & SUV: Trucks and Sport-Utility Vehicles only. Any brand truck or SUV, but must be powered by GM LS or Gen-V LT engine. Drag radials and bias ply slicks permitted.

  • Cadillac V-Club V-Series Class: Class is limited to 50 entries maximum. Cadillac V-series vehicles only. All power adders allowed. Aftermarket power adders allowed. No slicks...radials or street tires only. No tube chassis, back-halved cars, full front clips, or wheelie bars. "Off the trailer" racing only...no time trials or qualifying permitted. Stock-appearing interior, backseat delete okay, must have front passenger seat.

  • Grudge Test-N-Tune: Fun run class, no payout. All vehicles must pass inspection for ET and speed.

MotorLife Grand Champion

LSFW22 Autocross

The Grand Champion competition is the test of the well-rounded vehicles, the do-it-all machines and the drivers who wheel them. Going fast is only part of the equation...they need to be able to not only move out, but be able to corner like a startled mountain lion and stop on a dime as well. And they need to be able to do that all weekend long on the same set of DOT-legal street tires (tread wear of 200 or better) and everything that makes it a street car intact. Each car will compete in Autocross, Track X, the 3S Challenge, and Drag Racing for points, which will be the determining factor of who wins in each of the three classes:

  • Rekudo Vintage (1989-older cars)
  • Three Pedals Late Model (1990-newer cars)
  • Holley Classic Trucks Truck (all trucks)

Note: The Chevrolet El Camino, GMC Sprint/Caballero, and any other coupe-utility vehicles will be classified as cars in competition and will not be eligible for Truck Class. There are only 150 slots available for Grand Champion and Autocross, so don't wait too long!

Speedtech Performance Autocross

LSFW22 AutoX Datsun

Speed is impressive, but speed and agility combined are stunning. Autocross puts both qualities to the test via a maze of cones designed to put machine and driver to the ultimate agility test as a sea of well-placed cones dictate the path, with sweepers, hairpins, chicanes and slalom sections mixed in to keep the steering wheel moving at all times. There will be plenty of track time available, so long as you are one of the 150 vehicles that enter in!

Baer Brakes 3S Challenge

LSFE20 3S

Speed. Stop. Steer. Sounds like the fundamentals for just about every aspect of racing that occurs at Holley's LS Fest, right? The 3S Challenge takes the three main aspects of vehicular motion...accelerating, cornering, and stopping...and puts them into a side-by-side mirror-image drag race-style showdown. Just being fast enough doesn't mean you'll come out on top. Brake too early or too hard, and you scrub time. Get loose while turning, there's more time. And if you overrun the braking box and take out a poor, defenseless cone or two, that is time deducted. It's all about balance...can you handle your car in every way while in competition?

Runs will be tallied with the left-side run and right-side run combined. To earn a timed run, each segment must be clean...in other words, PLEASE don't run over Mr. Orange Cone!

Hurst Track X

LSFW22 TrackX

It would be a shame to be at Texas Motor Speedway and not use all that racetrack, wouldn't it? We thought so too, so we will be bringing our Track X racing program to the inside road course. Track X combines autocross and road course racing into one event: add a few autocross gates and chicanes on the track and you get a high-speed event that highlights driver skill without pushing the limits of the track. Track X is open to autocross and all-access participants.
