Holley People News Project Skylark finally sees the light of day after seven years

Michael Kise has been on the tech lines and working for Holley for almost 15 years now. He started on the tech lines and took the knowledge he gained there to our product quality control department. He is another shining example of how the people at Holley eat, sleep, and breathe this stuff. He bought this 1972 Buick Skylark in 1996 as a project that he and his three children could build up together. Well the reality of raising three set in, and there was never time for the A-body. Michael trickled money into the project when he had any to spare, but it was slow going. The last seven years of the car’s life was spent with its heart on an engine stand. He did, however, have a clear plan of what he would do with it.

“I knew I always wanted to run a small blower on it because it was different and you never see a blower on a small-block Chevy engine. I have to give props to Kyle Smith (at Holley) for the idea of installing two 144 blowers on a cross ram using old B&M universal blower mounting adapter plates (allows you to bolt the blower to a carb flange on an intake manifold). I will drive the right blower with a 10 rib belt from a custom lower crank pulley (using a 16 rib top pulley) and use a 6 rib belt to drive the left blower off of the right blower. There is no common plenum on the manifold so I will have to underdrive each blower so each will feed 175 CID instead of a combined 350CID. Carb tuning should be fun,” Michael shares.

The engine is currently in the shop of well-known Buick builder and racer John Massoud for the rebuild and setup of the dual-144 350-cubic inch Buick motor. It is getting a .492/.523-inch lift, 225/235-degree duration at .050-inch lift Lunati camshaft, ported heads, cross-ram manifold, two 144 Weiand superchargers, Hooker Super Competition headers, X-pipe, and Hooker Aerochamber mufflers. Behind the 350 is another TH350 rebuilt by ATI with a B&M 2,500-rpm stall converter. Out back sits a GM 12-bolt with 3.55:1 gearing and an Eaton-style posi unit.

The suspension has been all cleaned up with a bushing upgrade, new springs and shocks, boxed upper and lower control arms, and a freshened up set of front discs and rear drums. With the kids a little older, he can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. He looks forward to getting this thing on the road, SOON!
