Behind The Build: Death Proof Crawler - Video

Patrick Jones of Death Proof Crawler shares the story behind his 4889 King of the Hammers race truck, a build completed in just five months in his two-car garage alongside his girlfriend. Designed from the ground up as both a competitive race truck and future play rig, the chassis was built around the top half of a ’98 Tacoma single cab, allowing for a fully enclosed cab if desired. The drivetrain features a 4L80 transmission with a reverse manual valve body, Behemoth 205 transfer case with crawl box, Super Duty front axle, 14-bolt rear, and 37” Maxxis RAZR MT tires. With one-ton axles, upgraded braking from Bear Brakes, front and rear winches, and a well-thought-out spare and tool setup, the 6,000-pound truck is built for durability and self-sufficiency in brutal desert and rock conditions.

Inside, the truck is equipped for serious performance and control, including dual-case shifters, a Sidewinder shifter with rock gate, full comms, and strategically placed lighting—including pop-up lights for high-speed night racing. A Holley Pro Dash paired with a Holley Terminator X system provides fully customizable data visibility, crucial at high speeds. Powered by a Magnuson TVS 2300 supercharger, the setup produces around 370 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque at the wheels—delivering reliable power that makes a significant difference in competition. See how it all came together in the accompanying video.
