Isaac and Adam Preston of Caneyville, KY had a rollercoaster ride of a weekend at LS Fest X 2019 with a major wheel stand, low ET passes, many broken parts and a trophy. Campaigning Josh Arnold’s 6.0L LS powered Mustang, the brothers set the bar high on Friday night by going a 4.94 @ 148 mph in round one of qualifying.

____

The second round was a little more eventful after Adam tried to be an acrobat by dragging the bumper cover until the one-piece front end caught air and blew off the car. The result was a hard landing that broke the k-member, oil pan, flywheel, hot side of turbo, ripped all of the bellhousing bolts out and tossing the alternator on the racetrack. They rushed to their shop to pick up a box of spare parts, their welder and a change of pants to begin putting the puzzle pieces back together. Thrashing Saturday afternoon they re-assembled the car in their pit area in a mere 6 hours!

Luckily, they got a bye run in the first round of eliminations and went out to try to break into the .80’s. Everything was on schedule until a head gasket gave out at around the 450ft mark and finished the pass with a 4.93 @ 137 mph. Teardown found a torched cylinder head, adding onto the already difficult weekend. The boys went to work welding the scars up and hand filing them down until it was ready for a new gasket. Finishing just before second round, they had enough time to fire the engine and ensure there were no major issues running a 5.19 @ 132.84 with no water in the block.

The quarter and semi-finals went much smoother clicking off back-to-back 5.0’s @ 140+ mph and Isaac was confident the car would do it again in the final round. Facing off against Casey Rance in his Nissan 240SX, who chose the right lane after winning the coin toss. Both cars entered the beams; Adam left first with a .081 reaction time and forced Rance to place catch-up. Unfortunately, the track was not long enough and the Mustang rolled through the traps at 5.20 @ 135.54 to Rance’s 5.37 @ 136.40 giving the Preston Brothers the win.

Under the hood we find what started life as a 6.0L, retaining the short block it sports a set of Frankenstein 799 cylinder heads, custom Cam Motion camshaft, modified factory truck manifolds. A Precision Gen 2 88mm turbo feeds the Holley Hi-Ram intake, while Holley EFI injectors handle the Methanol delivery.

A Dominator EFI system tackles all of the fueling, spark and boost control while a 7” Digital Dash lets Adam keep an eye on vitals when he is not attempting to drive into the stratosphere.

Congratulations to the Preston's and Josh Arnold on their big win at LS Fest X. They have plans to continue No-Prep racing the car later this season and continue hunting that elusive 4.80 pass, we wish them the best of luck!
