What Is Formula SAE?

Formula SAE (FSAE) is a global collegiate engineering competition organized by SAE International that challenges students to design, build, and compete with a formula-style race car. More than 420 teams from 52 countries participate in the program, applying classroom knowledge to real-world engineering problems while working within a comprehensive set of technical and safety regulations.

The competition is designed to evaluate a team's ability to develop a complete vehicle from concept to execution. Student-built cars are judged in a series of static events that assess engineering design, manufacturing cost, and business presentation skills by professionals from the automotive, motorsports, and aerospace industries.

Teams also compete in dynamic events that test acceleration, handling, endurance, efficiency, and overall vehicle performance. These events place a premium on reliability, drivability, and engineering excellence under competitive conditions. Scores from both the static and dynamic portions of the competition are combined to determine the overall winner, rewarding teams that demonstrate the strongest balance of innovation, performance, and execution.
