Paul Van Nus and the team at Dutchboys Hotrods unveiled their vision of the ultimate 1987 Buick Grand National at SEMA, a no-compromise build created for Angelo Vespi. The goal was clear: elevate the iconic Grand National with a mechanical, functional, aim-high approach while addressing some of the not so noticeable shortcomings of the original 1980s gear like aero, wheels, and interior plastics. The team replaced the factory composite front-end components with hand-formed sheet metal, sharpening the fit and finish while preserving the car’s dark, aggressive DNA. The Buick is motivated by a 427-inch Mast LS7 with twin 72mm turbos, positioned in a Pro Mod–inspired layout and controlled by a Holley Dominator ECU, delivering an estimated 1,500 horsepower with adjustable boost for both street and track use.

To achieve its ultra-low, purposeful stance, the car’s floor was fully re-engineered, channeling the unibody over a Detroit Speed XG front clip and a custom-built rear Quadralink suspension. Every detail was modernized without losing authenticity—from ABS brakes, traction control, and a Holley digital dash to a meticulously refined interior with Recaro seats and a hidden chromoly roll cage. The result earned major recognition at SEMA, including a Goodguys Gold Bar, HRIA Innovation Award, and Best of the Rest, confirming the build’s impact.
