When Greg Carnforth and his brother were looking for a project car to build, he wasn’t looking for a Volvo initially, much less a four-door wagon, but his family had a history with the brand. When this one came up for sale, he and his brother travelled to Dallas, Texas, and managed to get the long-sitting car in running condition and drove it back to his home in Louisville, Kentucky. After driving it for a couple of years in its stock configuration, it was time for all of the modifications that he had envisioned . A coupe donated its longer doors and the B-pillar was moved back to match, making it a two-door. While the car was under the knife it also got a custom chassis with Chevrolet truck arm rear suspension.

A late-model GTO donated its LS1 and T56 transmission. The engine was rebuilt with Texas Speed cylinder heads and an LS6 intake manifold. As nicely as it fit in the engine bay, you’d never know it didn’t belong there. The powerful wagon has served as Carnforth’s weekend toy for more than five years now, racking up a couple thousand miles in the process and making Volvo fans wonder why there weren’t two-door wagons from the factory.
