With the number of electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmissions available today, there's no reason to settle for just three gears and a kick-down linkage anymore. MSD's Atomic Transmission Controller, based on the popular Atomic EFI Series, eliminates the hassle of setting up and programming everything and works with available harness kits to be compatible with popular GM and Ford 4-speed automatics. You can easily modify such operating parameters as shift points, torque converter clutch behavior, and shift firmness, and it's all accomplished with the supplied handheld monitor – no laptop is required. Disconnect it once the configuration is complete or leave it connected and use it as a dash to monitor the transmission in real time. With the stand-alone Atomic Transmission Controller, you only have to specify a few basic parameters, which are all listed in the easy-to-follow initial setup menu. Just select your transmission type (GM 4L60E or Ford 4R70W, for example) – all supported transmission types are listed. Then choose the number of engine cylinders, the rear end (or transfer-case) gear ratio, and tire height. Then simply drive your vehicle and take advantage of the advanced setup menu items to dial in the transmission to your exact specifications. From there, you can control shift points and such characteristics as shift feel and torque converter clutch operation. There are even options for wide-open-throttle (WOT) shifting and vehicle-speed sensor configuration. With a passenger manipulating the parameters and monitoring real-time operational data on the handheld monitor, you'll feel the results as you drive down the road. Engine speed, vehicle speed, throttle position, transmission-fluid temperature, shifter position, and commanded gear will be right at your fingertips.
