If your engine kicks back when you try to start it because of high compression or locked-out timing, MSD’s Start and Step Retard Control will save your starter and your sanity. Just select 5, 10, 15, or 20 degrees of timing retard, and when the engine cranks, the load applied to the starter, flywheel, and rotating assembly is lessened so the engine will be easier to start. Once the engine starts, or when the start circuit is de-energized, ignition timing automatically returns to the set mechanical amount. The Start and Step timing control also includes a single stage of retard, which makes it perfect for nitrous engines. The retard can easily be activated when the nitrous is turned on, and you can even add a manual switch to implement a high-gear retard. Up to 15 degrees of retard is easily adjusted with a dial. The Start and Step timing control can be connected to distributors using a magnetic pickup, solid-state breaker-less pickups like the Mallory Unilite, or even old-fashioned breaker points, and it's perfectly compatible with 4, 6 and 8-cylinder engines.
