South Georgia Motorsports Park has always welcomed drag racers. SGMP is known for getting wild and loud with grudge racing and shootouts, but it seemed like everything was perfect and welcoming for the racers on Sick Week 2022. The skies were clear and the temperatures were cool...an ideal combination for the drag racer. With density altitudes somewhere between "low" and "negative", many racers were cracking off their best times of the week, dropping a tenth or two off the ET. While racer attrition was still a factor, other racers battled through all sorts of drama just to stay in the game. Tales of accidents on the freeway, emergency repairs, and wayward deer meant that drivers were more than happy to be at the track. After starting with 341 cars in Bradenton, only 281 remained at SGMP.

Joel Magill's 1997 Chevrolet C1500 certainly had momentum coming into South Georgia. At Gainesville, his turned-in time was 10.004...with a one-second penalty for sitting on the line. Knowing that he was on something, he hit the lanes again and realizing that he was on a solid pass, broke out of his class and blasted a [email protected]. He couldn't turn that timeslip in, but that is moving for a 4,600-plus pound stick-shifted truck. Stefan Gustafsson's Volvo wagon blasted a [email protected] first lap, and when asked by 1320Video if he was going to just turn his slip in for the day, his response was priceless: "Now we are going to try to go fast."
