Exhaust Time!

Over the years there have been several exhaust systems on this car, and until now they have left a lot to be desired. With little engines like these 1.6 liter 16 valve ones, the exhaust can often sound like bees in a coffee can. I wanted to steer clear of that sound. The difficulty compounds with the MR2. See, MisterTwo's engine placement, being close to the back of the car, leaves very little room to fit mufflers, and the overall exhaust path is very short. MR2's often lose low end power due to having an exhaust that is too free flowing, and too short. I've attached a couple of pictures that show a few different exhaust systems I have tried over the years. I've finally landed on an exhaust that sounds great, in all applications. Flowmaster's muffler line up is extensive, filled with high quality parts! The first muffler in the exhaust path is an HP-2 Laminar Flow muffler

design. It is a short, small sized muffler that allows an aggressive sound volume, but it's internal cones help to mitigate the raspiness. Such an aggressive sound isn't good for longer trips though, and for driving with the wife and having a nice conversation. That's where the cool part kicks in. I've installed a remote controlled electronic valve that can divert the exhaust flow away from the drivers side outlet, and force the air through two Flowmaster FlowFX mufflers. This still leaves a much better flowing exhaust than factory, but giving a drone free sound, only a little louder than factory.

Plus the symmetric double wall chrome tips look great, and the whole exhaust sits tucked up into the car higher than factory, leaving room underneath for future mods!
