A/C R12 to R134a Conversion

By: David 05/17/2021

1/21 - My Schrader Valve was leaking on the original A/C Compressor which I tried tightening but it wouldn't tighten anymore, So I figured if I had to replace the Schrader valve, that I might as well replace everything LOL. I also wanted to redo an A/C Hose and an A/C hard line to better fit around the Supercharger area. And I wanted to see if I could update the old R12 system to accept the newer R134a Refrigerant. What I found was encouraging, It looked like most the new aftermarket replacement compressors are ready to accept the new refrigerant and I also found an Expansion Valve that was for R134a and fit my application. I ended up replacing: Compressor, Evaporator, Valve, Drier, and the two lines. I kept my original Condenser but cleaned the outside really good and fixed any fins that were bent.

To whom It may concern lol, Just some pics of everything,

New and old Compressor (made in china so I don't have much confidence that it will last 35 yrs like the original) but it did fit up perfectly even though it is slightly different.

Old and New Evaporator and Expansion Valve. (China again I believe, Less fins per inch so I'm not real thrilled about that but it did fit up just fine)

Old hose on top and new on the bottom. I had it custom made over the internet by telling them the length/size of hose, type of end connections and the clocking of each end. It had me nervous doing it over the internet but I did good and it fit great.

I then had it charged up with R134a and it's been a few months now and so far so good. We'll see.
