Chevelle's transition to Sniper

By: STEVE 12/05/2022

Well, what can I say? It's been a journey - not one I would do again if given the choice.....Let's see, started a year ago with the original purchase of a Holley Sniper SFI system. Thought this was a well-proven system and one that had been out long enough for Holley to have everything figured out - I mean, after all, it's made by Holley! One of the most well-used, well-know- most trusted carburetor platforms of ALL time - right??? Well, let me just say, it's been a learning experience. Got the system for Christmas 2021. Began installation in January 2022. Upgrade the fuel supply to an Aeromotive in-tank fuel delivery system. Everybody loves to drop their fuel tank - right? Especially doing it all by yourself! Well, I would do it 10 more times if that would make all of the other problems go away....Got thought all of that, new fuel lines, filter, etc, New fuel pressure regulator and supply to the ECM. Install the ECM and began the arduous process of troubleshooting the system after that. Got the ONE power supply relay that Sniper supplied for the fuel pump only to later learn that they really need to supply about 4 more for all of the other "Separated/Isolated" power to other systems so that there is no EMI. What's EMI - you'll get a crash course in it if you put this system on your car. I ended up going with the Holley Hypertech distributor and spark controller box as a result of so many issues with the older Unilite distributor & coil. Started to see hope once that was changed, but continued to have EMI issues. The only cure I found for this was these Ferrit Torrid core filters on each wire. Once these were on, the problems stopped. Don't know Holey doesn't think about this when building these kits - cost to include is minimal and does so much for having a successful start-up. Won't go into the hours and hours I spent on the phone talking to everyone they have in the Holley tech line. (All nice guys and all very good helping you troubleshoot the problems you are encountering - find the pink wire.....if I was told that once, I must have been told 100 times....) Anyway, fast forward 9 months and 1700 miles....moving back home from Goodyear, AZ, then upgrading the software on the tuner. Major mistake! After uploading, the Sniper ECU would not take the new program into the ECU. And then came the problem of "Not communicating with ECU". After being on the Holley Tech line for another excruciating hour and a half, I was advised to pull the ECU and send it and the handheld back to Holley for a warranty inspection. So, here was are 2 weeks out and a car that doesn't run....Waiting to hear what they find out and getting this thing back on the car. Holley Help!!!!!
