FlowFX cat back

By: Darren 09/03/2023

I installed the Flowmaster FlowFX cat back exhaust yesterday.

Installation was simple. The most difficult part was removing the old muffler. It was the factory muffler, all one piece from the cat back (mufflers can last 21 years in the south!). I wouldn’t have been able to remove it without cutting it in 2 places. Since the Flowmaster muffler comes separate from the tailpipe, it was pretty simple to route the new pipe even when working on jack stands. Everything cinched down real tight and fit properly.

The exhaust sounds good. It’s only slightly louder at idle than stock. There is a gentle rumble at low rpm and a nice, louder resonance as rpms accelerate past 2500. Some drone is present at cruising speed, but nothing bothersome in this old jeep (at least I can’t hear the roof rack whistling anymore). It’s easily overcome with normal volume radio. I love the sound of downshifts. Makes me wish I had a manual to hold the rpms in the sweet spot, longer.

Acceleration is more responsive, and freer revving. It’s easier to reach and stay in the upper rpms now that the engine can breathe easier. The combination of the CAI and the free flow exhaust has awakened the old jeep. It’s still a 4.slow, but it feels more fun than stock.
