Early Years 03-17

By: shane 12/26/2024

I remember sitting in the passenger seat of the car we had (i think it was a 99 grand am maybe a sunfire) and looking out the window and seeing this dark green Camaro sitting in little rocky lot- and my dad and mom (divorced but trying to work it out) stopping cause my mom just had to have this car, they wanted 500 bucks for her. She had a 305 with a rod knocking, but dad bought it anyways, drove it 2-3 blocks to the house and parked it and then winter comes and my mom totals the other car in a black ice accident, and thus the Camaro became a daily, and dad drove it for a year with a rod knocking and he was rough on it every day. well he ended up buying a 350 that leaked a lot of oil in 100 miles and pulled it and then installed a 355 jasper crated motor that he got for 100 bucks from one of his friends, and then he started street racing her a lot on top of daily driving it for the the next 4 or 5 year, then in 2007 him and mom split up again and she sat parked mostly because he hated that mom wouldn't sign her name off the title as he wanted to sell it as she only got 6 mpg and in 07 gas prices got pretty high for a single dad of 3 so he let her set for the next 10 years (hed occasionally drive her around the block but not often. Then we moved in 2014, she stayed at the old house for a few years till one day in 2017 where i drove by her again (this time im in my early 20s) and notice that tires had been aired up and someone had started to paint the license plates, i ask dad if he did it he says no, so i ask him if i could buy it off him. He says yes but only if i pay for the title transfer into my name, so i get my pickup *Mr. Bob* and drag her home, and pay the $96 bucks to get her into my name and got a battery and she fired up on the first go! It felt like she was saying she was ready to start living again, that 355 sounded so mean but sitting for so long had caused some issues- carb leaking, freeze plugs missing, electric fan not working- and i had a friend who had an uncle who said he could fix the freeze plugs in about an hour or so- so he took up to his shop where it set for 11 months, (Granit both his parents died in those 11 months) and then he charged me 1500 bucks, and when i got it back he had @$%&@$$$ the timing so the thing was gutless and sounded like a tractor. well i work hard for the next couple months - then in February 2019 ive got all my new parts installed- new carb- new fan, new plugs and wires and distributor and my cousin David helps set the timing on her- shes sound good sounding mean, its perfect, and hes like take it around the block and come to my house ima double check it well i make a right turn a block from his house, and it shuts off and starts smoking, The battery had decided to short out and catch fire- and she just stopped in the middle of the road- i get out and run to the nearest house and ask for help - I'm calling my dad and then the fire department (They took 30 minutes to go two and half blocks, and by then shes toasty but we saved it form getting into the interior so still fixable!!! my dad who lived at the other end of town beat them their and tried his best but one fire extinguisher wasn't enough, but all said and done we got her put out and hauled back to the house where her carcass set for a few months before i started rebuilding her....
