Vehicle Overview
This project is centered around a 2016 RAM 1500 equipped with the 5.7L HEMI, built with the goal of creating a reliable daily-driven performance truck that balances real-world usability with measurable power improvements.
The truck is currently undergoing a systematic upgrade process focusing on engine breathing, ignition efficiency, and PCM tuning, while maintaining long-term reliability and drivability. Rather than performing random bolt-on modifications, the build strategy is focused on supporting systems working together — airflow, ignition, exhaust, and engine calibration.
Current work performed and planned includes:
• Hooker BlackHeart Shorty Headers replacing the restrictive factory exhaust manifolds to improve exhaust flow and reduce backpressure.
• ARP header hardware and upgraded gaskets for long-term durability and leak prevention.
• Ignition system upgrades including coil packs and high-quality spark plugs to support stronger spark delivery under load.
• Valve cover service and PCV system inspection to eliminate oil accumulation around injector wells and ensure proper crankcase ventilation.
• Thermostat and cooling system evaluation to maintain optimal operating temperatures.
• Comprehensive PCM tuning using the DiabloSport Predator X platform, including unlocked PCM integration for full calibration control.
The truck is being built with a methodical, technician-driven approach, emphasizing proper diagnostics, correct torque specs, and quality components instead of shortcuts. Every modification is performed with the mindset that the truck must remain dependable enough for everyday driving while gaining noticeable improvements in throttle response, efficiency, and power delivery.
Long term, the goal is to develop a well-balanced HEMI performance setup that demonstrates how a truck can maintain practicality while achieving meaningful gains in performance and engine efficiency.
Future Plans
The long-term vision for this build is to develop a fully optimized street-performance RAM 1500 by progressively improving airflow, ignition performance, drivetrain response, and engine calibration.
Planned upgrades and development include:
Engine Performance
• Full custom PCM calibration using DiabloSport Predator X
• Optimized fuel mapping, ignition timing, and throttle response
• Adjusted transmission shift points and torque management
Ignition System Optimization
• Upgrade to high-performance ignition coils (MSD or equivalent) to ensure stronger spark energy under load
• Install premium performance spark plugs designed specifically for HEMI combustion characteristics
Airflow & Induction Improvements
• Installation of a high-performance cold air intake system
• Potential ported or upgraded throttle body to improve intake airflow
• Future intake manifold optimization
Crankcase Ventilation & Engine Health
• Installation of a dual oil catch can system to reduce oil vapor contamination in the intake tract
• Continued monitoring of PCV system efficiency
Exhaust System Development
• Evaluate cat-back exhaust upgrades to complement the Hooker BlackHeart headers
• Maintain exhaust tone while maximizing exhaust scavenging efficiency
Cooling & Reliability Enhancements
• Performance thermostat to improve engine temperature stability
• Cooling system monitoring during tuning and high-load operation
Data Monitoring & Performance Tracking
Using the Predator X platform, the truck will monitor:
• Air/Fuel ratio
• Knock @$%&@$
• Intake air temperature
• Coolant temperature
• Transmission temperature
• Engine load and throttle position
These metrics will be used to fine-tune performance gains while protecting engine longevity.
