  • Vehicle Overview

My first car was a 1970 Grand Prix and I always wanted to convert it to a 4sp.... most parts were easy to find, however the frame bracket and shifter console were like hens teeth. I sold the car when I purchased my home in 1986. Fast forward to 2008 where I came to own this 1969 GP.... its was a car I knew well and had driven as a teenager. My brother and I spent a few years slowly dismantling her to get the body work and paint completed which happened in Aug 2016 (I know, long story). We spent the next year restoring all of the cars mechanical and electrical systems back to stock and were able to complete the conversion to an M20 4sp. I had to manufacture the counter shaft frame bracket and used the automatic shifter plate to make a 4sp plate. One of the biggest problems was carburetion.... we tried to get the Q-Jet to work but like my first car I tossed the Q-Jet and bolted on a Holley 650.... she idles sweet at 450 RPM and roars to life easily. The car also has an ATC (Automatic Temp Control) system same as a modern car ....fixing the controller was an adventure but we figured it out and restored the AC system while we were at it. We have restored basically everything on this Grand Prix and the 4sp makes it so much fun to drive.

    Future Plans

I have 323 gears and a wide ratio M20 now... which I like, problem is highway cruising. I have been looking at either a modern 5 or 6 speed or an over drive unit... leaning toward the over drive unit since I like the M20. The other thing is to go to EFI at some point.
