Simpson Racing Harnesses Systems Meet New NHRA/SFI Regulations

07/01/2025

As of July 2025 NHRA competitors must use harness systems certified to SFI 16.1 or 16.5 standards—already implemented by NASCAR, IndyCar, and other major sanctioning bodies. Racers can choose between six-point and seven-point safety harnesses.

The six-point harness provides more protection than the previously used five-point system while offering improved comfort and ease of use.

The seven-point harness offers the highest level of containment and safety, particularly reducing the risk of submarining during crashes—an important feature in rollover scenarios. Top Fuel drivers often prefer this setup for its added protection.

If your vehicle currently has a five-point system, upgrading is straightforward—existing center strap mounts can be reused, with minor additions needed for the extra leg straps. Proper mounting is essential for maximum effectiveness; mounting tabs should be aligned correctly to prevent “dumping,” a condition where webbing bunches up, weakening the harness.

Shoulder harnesses should be mounted horizontally or at a slight downward angle to work effectively with head and neck restraints. Simpson offers a wide range of certified six- and seven-point harnesses, including custom options and Nomex fire-resistant materials.
