With its parachute and wicked stance, Anthony Cooper’s 1970 Camaro looks like a drag race warrior. And with a potent boosted LS under the hood, it has the muscle to back up the look. In fact, power comes from a 376-cubic-inch LS that has a forged bottom end, ported stock heads and a Holley Hi-Ram intake and Holley throttle body.
Boost comes from a single Borg Warner S480 turbocharger that’s tuned with a Holley HP electronic fuel injection system. “I built the car to be fast, but it’s a legit Street/Strip car,” said Anthony. “If you look inside, it’s comfortable and I have Vintage Air, along with the cage, stereo system and all the gauges.”
The Hugger Orange Chevrolet is a real Z/28, too, so the factory engine would have been the venerable LT1 350 producing 360 horsepower at 5,600 rpm. As you’re probably aware, the Z/28 for ’70 was available with a manual or automatic and they typically ran low 14s at 100 mph – although Anthony’s Z is now much quicker.
Power from the 6.0-liter LS engine is transferred to a GM 4L80 overdrive transmission and then to a Ford 9-inch. It has a stock-style suspension with the addition of Calvert Racing Caltrac bars and shocks for help in the hook department. And as is evident, the Camaro rides on Weld wheels and Mickey Thompson Drag Radial tires.
The Empire, Alabama resident has owned the Camaro for 4 years and this is his 14th trip to LS Fest East at Beech Bend Raceway Park. He’s only missed LS Fest one time, as this is the 15th Anniversary event. “I love it, and we look forward to coming every year. I love hanging out, walking the midway to see all the vendors and all the friends I’ve made over the years.”
