MoParty 2024: Grand Champion

09/15/2024

As the sun shines brightly on a perfect day, the 2024 Holley MoParty is set to be memorable. This year's Grand Champion competition promises to be a showcase of the very best in Mopar performance, and the excitement is palpable.

The Grand Champion contest at MoParty is always a fan favorite, bringing together the best Mopar enthusiasts for a test of all-around performance. Participants must excel across three key areas: autocross, drag racing, and the 3S Challenge. It's a true measure of speed, agility, and driving skill, with competitors battling it out for the top spot in what can only be described as a high-octane, adrenaline-pumping showdown.

  • Autocross: Drivers navigate a challenging course designed to test their handling and precision. Every turn and cone counts as competitors strive for the fastest lap times.
  • Drag Racing: A classic test of straight-line speed, where powerful Mopar machines unleash their full potential on the strip.
  • 3S Challenge: This unique segment combines elements of autocross and speed-stop into a single, high-intensity test. The course features a side-by-side, low-speed layout with a 180-degree turnaround, slalom, and stop box. Each run's total time is calculated from both the left and right sides of the course.

Benji Farr's Consulier GTP

What is it? Well, it's not a kit car. Owner Benji Farr became so tired of that question that he made a sign that hung on the windshield. It's a rare Consulier GTP, a car produced by a private manufacturer in the 1980s/1990s. It's a collection of one-off and miscellaneous manufacturer parts, like El Camino rear taillights, BMW windshield wipers, and Volvo pedals. The drivetrain is all Mopar, featuring a Chrysler 2.2L turbo four-cylinders (like you'd find in a Dodge Daytona). It's a front-wheel-drive driveline positioned as a rear-engine transaxle.

Around 60 were built, and they competed in SCCA and endurance races, eventually banned by some sanctioning bodies. This one is estimated to be around 2,000 pounds and makes around 300 hp.

"I've been a Turbo Dodge guy since I could drive," said Benji. "I knew about them, but they're unobtanium. I thought I'd never be able to own one." He found this one through a Facebook group with a blown engine.

"It's like driving a go-kart on the street," said Benji. Is he scared to drive it on the street? "Nope, I drive it every week."

Sean Thomas's 1977 Dodge Street Van

He may be the slowest on the autocross, but he's having the most fun. Sean Thomas brought his 1977 Dodge Street Van YH3. The van's original motor was a 318ci but had a bad valve, so he upgraded to a 340ci. It's bone stock, minus a "lunch box" locker with 3:55 gears. "Doesn't even have a sway bar," said Sean.

Why is he autocrossing a van? "Just getting out and using my stuff," said Sean. He's also camping out of it in the campground next to the track. "it's a rolling motel. This is the only way to do it, it don't matter how fast it is, you just go out there and do what you can do and have a good time."

Erik Peachey's 2008 Dodge Viper

Saturday's leader is returning champ Erik Peachey, in his 2008 Dodge Viper. It features a handful of bolt-ons, including headers (but stock mufflers), intake, and an upgraded clutch. The suspension features Penske coilovers.

This car was driven by brother Justin Peachey when he secured the Triple Crown of Grand Champion (winning the 2022 LS Fest, MoParty, and Ford Fest).
