With fifteen events scheduled for the 2022 season, the Goodguys Autocross Series will be hotly contested at tracks throughout the country. From professionals in cars that could slosh your brain to one side of your headspace with each corner carved to sporting daily drivers that are out having a bit of fun, Goodguys events are a great introduction to the range of cone-dodging machines anyone could expect to find. On one hand, you'll have Mustangs, Camaros and the like that are plenty capable right off of the showroom floor putting down solid lap times with drivers that may or may not be used to the ballet of a tight autocross. Then there are the professionals...people like Josh Leisinger, Mike DuSold, David Carrol and Bill Graves, for example, who have created machines that seem to defy science and physics. Often taking the form of classic machines like older Corvettes, Camaros and Chevrolet pickup trucks, the abilities that these individuals have engineered into these cars and trucks is so far beyond what was originally expected from the platform that it's not out of reach to wonder what the original factory engineers and designers would have to say if they could witness the spectacle taking place on the track.
For the next eight months, drivers will race against the clock for one of three potential victories: The 2022 Class Champion, which is judged by the total points from a driver's best five events plus earned shootout points; an invitation to the Duel In The Desert; and the Autocrosser of the Year, which is awarded to the driver with the highest total points standings in the 2022 season. Bill Holt and Rob MacGregor co-raced this No Limit Built Squarebody to a 1st place in Truck class and in the Truck Shootout. It is awesome to see an 1980s truck hanging in there with all of the Corvettes.
David Carrol waits patiently to make a run in his LS-Swapped Datsun 280Z. This car has won many GoodGuys autocrosses and was in the top-five fastest this past weekend.
The wild array of cars that run these events, such as Tim Molsen's Dodge Dart, is always one of the best parts. You will have completely stock cars racing against purpose built hot rods.
Jason Bottenfield brought out his DuSold Designs-built “Texaco Camaro” and was able to secure a first in the Pro class. This was Jason’s first event with his brand new Sadev sequential transmission.
The promoters brought out their crew-cab Silverado and were running the course four-deep all of Sunday. They were doing pretty well against the other cars on the track.
