1960 "FANCY" Thunderbird Convertible

By: Matt 02/28/2023

Let me begin by saying that I have owned and restored (14) Thunderbirds between the years of 1957-1960 since 1985. I have performed frame-off restorations on (3) 1957 models, but this was the very first time I have ever completed a rotisserie restoration on a Squarebird. I can assure you that this was the most difficult restoration that I have ever completed due to the size of this unibody car being mounted to a rotisserie, fully stripped, metal worked, and then mostly assembled on a body cart before the 4 wheels touched the ground, once again, 4 years later. All media blasting and metal work was performed by DR Blast (was in Converse, TX but has since relocated to Cibolo).

I think it is important to note that the underside of this car was painted with the same base-clear Axalta system that the exterior was. This was accomplished while the car was on the rotisserie. Here is a picture:

It did get some overspray on it during the exterior paint process, but it still looks amazing under there! I am NOT a fan of undercoating because it is too often used as a mask to cover structural issues. This car hides nothing and shows the owner exactly what they have.

The epoxy primer applied to all freshly blasted surfaces was a hexavalent chrome material made by Axalta. In total, I do not believe that any of the structure went without being opened-up, any corrosion present was removed with 180 grit media, and then epoxy primed before being expertly welded back together and re-primed. Three trunk pans, two floor pans, both rockers, and part of one rear quarter panel was replaced. Take an opportunity to review the photos on the website link to lend some perspective to how much work was completed to ensure a solid, corrosion-free structure. I don’t like rust.
