"Project Stocker" is my 1987 5.0 Mustang LX that was converted to a purpose-built NHRA Stock Eliminator drag car and served as a magazine project for Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords magazine from roughly 1995 until 2013. I've owned the Ford Mustang since December 14, 1987 and used it as my daily driver and weekend racer for many years. In 1995 I began the conversion to NHRA Stock Eliminator, first with the 110,000-mile 5.0 and T-5 transmission. With help from a lot of people I was able to run under the NHRA L/S index of 13.00. Like most projects, the Mustang progressed with addition of a properly built Stocker engine from B&B Performance Machine and a Jerico 4-speed. I was able to set the L/S national record and believe it ran as quick as 11.56. I ran the Mustang in the 5.0 LX trim with the 225 hp engine for a a few years before switching to 1993 SVT Cobra specifications. This allowed me to upgrade to the GT-40 induction and slightly higher-lift cam. I also added the bodywork to complete the Cobra makeover. In the trim it was a consistent 10.90 machine and has run as quick as 10.65 at 123 mph, while still using many of the original Cobra engine parts such as a 65mm throttle body, Cobra intake and GT-40 heads with stock valve sizes and factory cam lift. Unfortunately, I haven't race the car in quite a few years, but a comeback is in the works. Kuntz and Co. built the most recent engine and taking advantage of all the rules it was able to achieve over 400 RWHP. In addition to the parts listed, the engine uses long-tube headers, X-pipe, and is backed by a McLeod Soft-Lok clutch with a G-Force Racing transmissions GF-5R 5-Speed manual gearbox. The rear is a Strange 9-inch. As per he NHRA guidelines, the suspension is comprised of aftermarket replacement parts that bolt into the stock location. We must also use the stock K-frame and stock-style suspension. The Mustang is all steel and weighs 3,070 with driver. Other parts include Strange brakes, Mickey Thomspon tires and I have two sets of wheels, one from MT the other from Weld. I remember when this car was a stock all blue LX in the pages of MM&FF. Glad to hear there's a comeback in the works.
