LS Fest East 2024: Drag Racing

09/10/2024

Attention in the pits: Drag racing is underway at the 15th Anniversary Holley LS Fest East. Racers have filled the iconic Beech Bend Raceway Park with an insane variety of straight-line automotive mayhem, under the common theme of the mighty LS (and LT) powerplants. Topping the roster is the Callies No Time Shootout, featuring the fastest small-tire cars on the property in a heads-up, no-time, limited-prep format.

Callies No Time Shootout

The popular $10K No Time Shootout continues for 2024. And this definitely is NOT your conventional drag race โ€“ itโ€™s a slugfest of professional and homebuilt hot rods. Every year seems to one-up the next, as fabricators cut, slice and strap all forms of LS engines into whatever they can get their hands on.

โ€œLS Fest East continues its Callies No Time Shootout in 2024,โ€ says Alex Stivaletti of Holley. This is a simple heads-up eighth mile โ€œno-more-prepโ€ race on Saturday afternoon and into the evening, โ€œThe race is intended for 275/10.5-inch door slammers, and $10K participants are not permitted to double enter into other classes. This is where the fastest small-tire cars on the property shine,โ€ explains Stivaletti.

Joe Hammann’s Dragster

Joe Hammann from Carlinville, Illinois has been coming to Holley LS Fest since 2016, most of the time campaigning an El Camino. Joe had been working on a homebuilt dragster since 2014, even robbing some parts off the El Camino to make this yearโ€™s event, running in the Quick 16 class.

This is Joeโ€™s first time bringing the dragster that he โ€œcompleted today.โ€ Joeโ€™s craftsmanship really shows on this build, from building the chassis table and a sheet metal radius break. Joe crafted the body panels using the metal break. The dragster sports a 365ci LS2 with forged internals and a filled block topped with dry deck heads matched up with a Powerglide running a 1.69 planetary inside a Reid aftermarket case. The rear end is a Strange 9.5-inch with a 3.90 pro series gear. Joe also built the blow-through carburetor for E98 fuel and a VS 88/93 turbo with again, you guessed it, homebuilt turbo kit by Joe. While heโ€™s only running low boost today to get the gremlins worked out, weighing in at 1,650 pounds, you can bet this will be a rocket ship.

Joe says his ultimate goal is to run mid 6โ€™s in the 1/4 mile with his homebuilt machine. Today will beg is first pass in the dragster. Weโ€™re glad to have you at LS Fest Joe.

Nick See’s Throwback ‘62 Chevy

At 17 Nick See fell in love with the classic lines of the 1962 Chevy. A local runner in his town of Esmond, IL was a regular at car shows and a cruise nights, and it was that car that led Nick to seek out a โ€™62 of his own.

He located this example in 2017, a formal-roof Impala SS that had a worn out 350 under the hood. โ€œIt was a true barn find,โ€ said Nick who is a manufacturing engineer by trade. โ€œIt originally had a 327 and a Powerglide, but thatโ€™s long gone. I just fell in love with this design and knew I wanted to build one.โ€

Nick removed the tired powertrain and inserted an all-aluminum 5.3-liter LS that he sourced from a GMC pick-up truck. โ€œI added a Tick Performance camshaft and then mated the engine to a Tremec T-56, 6-speed transmission and the LS utilizes a Holley Terminator X EFI.โ€ Underneath the Chevy youโ€™ll find QA-1 Shocks, Mickey Thompson Drag Radials and Nick fabricated his own front control arms.

Added fun comes from the aforementioned 6-speed transmission. โ€œI had to have a manual,โ€ he told us. Power is sent from the manual box to a custom driveshaft and on to a Ford 9-inch rear end. โ€œI did all the work myself, which makes it extra satisfying. But I do get help from my dad, Dave and friends Jake and Chuck.

โ€œThis is my 4th time attending LS Fest in Bowling Green and the 6th time Iโ€™ve come here, itโ€™s a โ€˜Bucket Listโ€™ event for me. Itโ€™s amazing to see all the builds and everything that goes along with such a huge happening. My car has run 12.50s at 110 mph so far, but I have upgrades coming to make it quicker. I plan on installing a M122 Eaton Supercharger from a Shelby GT500. I got a manifold that allows the use of the blower with the LS engine, and I already installed the intercooler under hood.โ€

The supercharger should provide a sizeable increase in horsepower and torque. Assuming he can hook the big Chevrolet, that should knock a second or more off the elapsed time, in addition to providing bigger smiles when he smashes the throttle.
