Brake Refresh

By: Josh 03/17/2021

Many AW11 MR2 owners know that a common issue is for the brake master cylinder to start leaking over time. This is simply due to age and degradation of the rubber seal. On most cars the issue isn't very bad, maybe you will get a couple drops of brake fluid on your garage floor, or maybe you will never even notice at all. MisterTwo has a special feature, however. Any fluid that leaks in the front compartment (frunk) is conveniently captured and stored at the bottom, in what the paint would consider a pool of liquid kryptonite. Naturally the brake fluid does a remarkable job of not only removing the paint, but accelerating the corrosion process. Can you tell yet that I despise brake fluid?

Enough of my rant, I figured if I am refreshing the heart of this car, it deserves a new braking system. Plus, I really do want the car to stop when I drive the car for the first time in over 5 years!

In the front, I fitted a new brake master cylinder. The frunk area was prepped and repainted to repair the damage of the devil fluid. New rotors and pads all around. The calipers were replaced soon before the dooms track-day, so I cleaned them, polished and lubed the slides. The caliper brackets were removed, sand blasted, and painted for a nice fresh look. To finish things off, nice new stainless steel braided brake hoses were added. Much better!
