Carl's Ride

By: Chuck 03/18/2021

Sometime during late summer 2019, my younger brother Carl and I were discussing my next retirement project since I was building a nice two-car garage/shed. He had been diagnosed earlier in the year with leukemia after being in remission from lymphoma for a few years. I had been toying with the idea of a Cobra kit car but was complaining on the high cost of such an endeavor. Then the idea of restomodding a TR-6 into a British Cobra popped into mind and brother Carl responded: "Hell yeah, do something radical!" So the search for a salvageable TR-6 began. Unfortunately, the leukemia overcame Carl and he passed away December 6, 2019. I had already zeroed in on a Dallas Craigslist posting for a 1974 example that had experienced an engine compartment fire and was totaled by the owner's insurance company. It looked to be in sound mechanical shape with the fire damage mostly confined to the firewall/scuttle box/dash area. I brought it home on a U- Haul car carrier on January 3, 2020. By this time, I had determined to make it a tribute car to Carl. He had been an Army combat medic in Desert Storm so I decided to go with that theme. I'm still in the tear-down mode waiting to build up the Ford small block engine so I can locate all the weld-in mounts/supports for the Ford engine and 4R70W transmission. Hopefully, my ideas will translate out into something worthy to honor his memory.
