Where it began, and why THIS car?

By: Jeff 06/25/2022

Lets start with where I got my obsession for cars, as an early 90’s kid growing up in central mass, I grew up one town over from the home of what’s known as “Summer Nationals” where they held burnout shows in 2 parts of the city for an entire weekend, talk about cool old custom cars, any gear head to be would instantly be hooked, and I was! A family friend had a 84 monte SS with a built motor and a 871 weiand on top and nitrous and it was a blast to go for rides in that car, soo as to be expected, I also fell in love with G-bodies. Fast forward to my teenage years, I dropped out of high school and went to work for my father who owns a transmission shop in Maine, when I was approaching time for my license, my father was just getting finished up redoing this 76 Impala with a mild rebuilt 355, and rebuilt th350 trans, as well as all new brakes and tires, the body was still in beautiful shape and the car only had 76K miles on it, I kept bugging him about the car and he eventually sold it to me for $500, a steal I know, but he figured I’d respect the car more if I had to pay something for it (LOL!). I ended up putting about 70k miles on the car within a year and a half driving back and forth from Maine to Mass a lot visiting family once I finally had my license, I was a free man! Stupidly, once I had found a second car when fuel started to go up, I figured it be better to sell this car rather than let it sit and rot and have it get use, as there was a guy local who kept bugging me to buy the car with plans to work on it more. He drove the car less than 50 miles and the car ended up sitting in his field for roughly 10-11 years until I finally tracked him down, after finding out he still had the car after all that time! We worked out a deal, and I had my first car back, it was looking sad sitting buried to the frame in mud, with a frozen wheel and doors that wouldn’t open, I got it on the trailer though, I was determined. The top of the car looks reasonably well, but the rockers and quarters are definitely showing the old school ways of bodywork with painters sticks exposed now from when the car had been redone before my father even owned it, I will be cutting back to clean metal, and welding in same gauge steel the car came with, as well as redoing the floors and truck. It’s a long journey, and I’ve had the car back for a little over a year now, and I’ve only recently started working on it within the last 4 months, but all the doors open, windows function as they should, and I’ve redone the brakes and lines, and repacked the bearings and have it rolling just as it did when I first had it again. The 350 that was in it was stuck from sitting, but I managed to get it free and running before doing one last burnout with the old drivetrain haha. I sold the 350 and th350 trans, and have since placed the 6.0 and 4L80 in the car. It is a long story, but me and the car have a short yet long history, and how cool to track down your first car and turn it into a boosted sleeping monster!
