The WJ Grand Cherokee entered production in 1999 as a followup to the successful 1st Gen ZJ. While the venerable 4.0L straight-six was back, the new 4.7L PowerTech V8 replaced the previous generation's V8 options. Quadra-Drive, an all-new automatic 4WD system also made its debut, which included an NV247 transfer case. This allowed power to be sent independently to any of the four wheels at any time, making sure the Grand Cherokee was worthy of the Jeep nameplate.
