The TACH87F is a low pass filter. This filter allows signals of valid tachometer frequencies to pass through to the gauge while blocking high frequency interference. This filter would be helpful if you have interference on the tachometer's signal which is causing erratic behavior on your tachometer. The filter also modifiies the sharp up and down spikes into a semi-square wave signal for steady pointer readings and faster pointer response.
