The AMC 20 rear 2 piece axle and improvements

By: Jeff 04/19/2023

The AMC20 rear axle is a two piece axle. As one of the pages while researching the axle stated, "The two-piece axle design that AMC used in most Model 20’s is about as sturdy as using dental floss for a tow rope." This is due to the previously mentioned two-piece design. This is where the axle shaft uses a seal retainer and bolt to hold the axle together. The bolt loosens itself over time and can cause the wheel to fall off. I personally thought that was a problem but how to fix it? Luckily they make a 1 piece axle kit for the AMC20 that resolves the issue but it took time to acquire but finally in July I had one. I then had it installed.

I wanted better traction on trails than the open differentials had but finding a rear locker for an AMC 20 is difficult especially if you want an eLocker. There are cable options but after looking at the costs and asking myself do I really need lockers, I decided to get Eaton TrueTracs limited slip for the front and rear. Why? Well, cost for one as the cost of lockers for just the rear was almost the same as both TrueTracs and I could have both axles improved. Second, with the design of the Eaton TrueTrac unless a wheel comes off the ground it comparable to a locker. I had TrueTracs installed in both the AMC 20 and the Dana 30 (front)
