My truck received the name Back Burner Special due to all the other projects that have pushed it to the back of the shop over the years. I acquired this truck over 30 years ago. It was such a rolling piece of junk, I decided that I would try any custom touch that crossed my mind. If you're looking for pedigree in this Ford truck........you might as well move on. Over the years, I've incorporated parts from a variety of different brands of vehicles and even some pieces taken from things like a drafting table. The bed, tailgate, running boards, and roll pan were fabricated from scratch as were a lot of the other small parts. Top was chopped 6", front suspension 70 chevelle, rear suspension 78 mustang II, 400 sbc bored .030, turbo 350, 342 rear out of a blazer.
Truck as I got it.08/13/2019
When I first got this truck, it was in very rough shape. Rotting shag carpet inside, butchered frame, lots of rust in the body, but I was able to drive it home ..........barely.
Scratch built bed08/18/2019
The original bed was badly rusted and butchered up, so I decided to build my own with some custom touches.
Scratch built tailgate08/18/2019
After building the bed, I gave a try at building the tailgate.
Roll pan fabrication08/18/2019
Roll pan was constructed from a modesty panel off a Mayline drafting table. I built 2 figuring I would screw up one of them.
Running Board Fab.08/19/2019
Running boards mocked up in wood and used for patterns. Added openings in the rear of boards for exhaust.
Made several wood blanks to mount gauges. Old gauge panel was already cut up, so fitted new wood panel to fit in stock surround.
Wood that was used for the bed was salvaged oak from an old barn that a tree decided to destroy. Planed the best planks for floor and used some of the wood to make the rub strips. Polished stainless was used to hold it all together. Stained the ru...
I used a set of powered bucket seats out a Chrysler 300 and wanted a custom console between them. Used poster board to get the general shape I wanted and transferred my pattern to some thin plywood. I stretched fleece over the plywood and coated it w...
Tailgate supports and latches08/20/2019
Since my tailgate is custom built, I needed to come up with a way to latch it and support it when open. If you've followed any of my build, you may have noticed that I either make my parts or repurpose parts from other cars. To latch my tailgate I...
Using patriot headers, I ordered a box of various mandrel bend exhaust pipe and spent a lot of time on a creeper laying out the exhaust system. Mufflers are Flowmaster 40 which I now think is a little loud for side exit exhaust.
Chopping the top.10/18/2019
Unfortunately, I failed to take a lot of pictures when I chopped the top on my truck. Again if the truck had been in better shape I probably wouldn't have chopped it. I initially cut it 5 1/2", when We set the top back on to see how the chop looke...
Couple years back I got the truck to a point that it is driveable, so I've been doing shake down runs and making minor changes as needed. Future plans are to work on finishing details, like glass, interior, maybe paint and driving it whenever I get a chance. Paint will be dove gray if I live that long.
