Initially, the El Camino was optioned and sold as a utilitarian vehicle, capable of working while being more forgiving on the road. By the time the 3rd Generation El Camino rolled around, GM came clean with the El Camino being a Chevelle with a bed on it. That meant every Chevelle engine was available in the El Camino, including the 454 cubic inch LS6.
